2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Fayette County completed the 2015 season with a 10-5 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region five, the Tigers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. The Tigers won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 4A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Leeds at the Alabama Super Seven 55-7 in Auburn. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2004. The defense allowed a team record 386 points last season. Since 2010, Fayette County has gone a combined 60-21. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 4A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Fayette County has gone a combined 222-85. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 4A and 19th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2004. The Tigers are led by head coach Lance Tucker who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 50-18 over the past five seasons at Fayette County. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Tucker. Coach Tucker's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 50-28 (64.1%). Over the course of his career, Coach Tucker's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won three region championships. The Fayette County Tigers will play in Class 4A region six during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 4A but move from region five over to region six. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 80-42 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 4A and 6th in the AHSAA. The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Tigers are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Tigers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2004 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Tigers open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Gordo on Thursday, August 18 at Green Wave Stadium. Last year the Gordo Green Wave finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 3A region four. The Green Wave lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 3A playoffs to Bayside Academy by a score of 17-14. Fayette County and Gordo have met a total of 77 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 42-33-2 record against the Green Wave. They last met in 2015 with Gordo winning by a score of 19-14. Fayette County returns 4A All-State Senior linebacker Kerieq Sparks. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
